Ordered item that was supposed to be in stock and available. Five days after order and no response made inquiry only to discover item was not only not in stock, they expected to have item in 2 weeks (maybe). My suggestion is be cautious if ordering from this vendor.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, I’m certainly no expert. But this model requires an external audio input, either optical or coax – it doesn’t get the audio off of the HDMI (pass-thru only). And from what I read, optical or coax only pass 5.1. I know it synthesizes 7.1 from 5.1 encoding, but is that the same as native 7.1 from a blu-ray? The next model up, the S6200, does get the audio input off the HDMI; so it seems like the better choice. But I’m sure that for all practical purposes, this one sounds great. (I’m sure it doesn’t deserve ‘one star’ – I just wanted to call attention to this point.)

I bought this HT-S5200 from Amazon and rec’d a supposedly sealed box. When I opened it I found the I-pod docking station and the pads for the sub-woofer were missing. But the surprises just kept coming. (1) The receiver doesn’t work. Onkyo tech support said “Take it to a repair center at our cost.” Great, except now I’m waiting 3 wks to get back a now-refurbished but hopefully repaired unit. (2) The subwoofer does not have an on/off switch. It remains ON for 24/7 unless you unplug it from the wall. Couldn’t Onkyo have spent a buck or so to provide a switchable outlet on back of the receiver to allow the sub to be plugged in to it? At least then the sub would turn off whenever the receiver was turned off. Nope! (3) There’s no on-screen menu. The “menu guide” appears in a little view panel on the front of the receiver. You have to guess whether to press the up/down or left/right keys on the remote as you try to work your way through the set up. (4) No Ipod docking station included in the sealed box. All in all, this package was full of unwanted surprises and was a big disappointment.
UPDATE: After receiver was repaired by authorized warranty site, it still doesn’t work. Now I get a blank screen then for a half second every 5 seconds a image appears. Back it goes again for repairs!

This is a great setup but there is one problem…the wiring hookup from the receiver to the speakers is really badly designed….For the life of me, I cannot understand why they would use such an inadequate design….It is very iffy in trying to connect the speakers to the receiver…be sure to look at this prior to buying…if I had noticed I would have bought another system
