If you are on a budget and plan on buy a all-in-one system, just make sure it's a blu ray system. People are still spending money on DVD systems, and then learn the hard way that often, a stand alone blu ray player cannot be integrated into the system. Anything that plays blu rays will play all of your DVDs. It will have HDMI, so just buy the cable if it's not included and your are all done.

the weakest link in most audio systems is the speakers - expect to spend at least 2 grand on anything respectable - a great subwoofer will make all the difference in the ambience
Meridian makes good, relatively affordable stuff, and so does Klipsch - look through eBay to get some idea of prices (since Crutchfield and other sites may not show prices)

not sure that HDMI carries 7.1 surround - I know that optical does

You only need HDMI from your sources. The optical only carries compressed Dolby Digital 5.1. (However - this is very good so dont knock it.)

With HDMI and bluray you can select un-compressed audio, but you have to have an AV receiver that can handle this. Look for this when selecting the receiver.

If you really want the 'best possible' sound - buy speakers from companies that make speakers as their main business. Crappy $399 systems are glorified DVD players with cheap speakers attached.

Get a setup BluRay like Digital Video Essentials and use it to level adjust your speakers for the better sound. Buy a self-powered subwoofer and corner load it. Use the calibration tutorial on the disk to properly set the color, brightness, contrast.

Cable sources:

I like www.bluejeanscables.com. I have heard good things about the "MediaBridge" brand which is Amazons house brand. You can get cheap asia-made cables from www.monoprice.com

Good luck.

No, the HDMI carries digital audio and is capable of performance equal to or exceeding other digital audio connections.

Save your money on cables too. The cheap HDMI cables are as good as the $60 ones from Monster or other high-enders.

Yes. If your projector has a component input and your receiver has component out (which it should have at least one set) It should not matter how you hook things up to your Receiver. Even if your projector only has analog inputs, your receiver receiver should have one video out to go top your projector. Your receiver is essentially the source switcher so you will want to leave it selected on your HDMI input as this has no effect on the output, essentially the receiver is a "pass through" once a source is connected. Whatever your external source is and selected on the receiver will go to all the applicable outputs of the receiver. So if you hook your xbox to the HDMI input 2 ( for example) of your receiver, select the HDMI 2 as your input and the infor will go through the receiver and distribute it and should go to your projector......NOW....The XBox video output needs to be selected as well. Unless its done automatically, you will need to go through the menu system and select set up and choose your output mode. I am not familiar with the settings on the 360 but most video systems that have more than 1 option for output, can only handle 1 method at a time so you wmay need to check the output setting of your xbox 360 as well.

If this did work the receiver would only be able to output what component could handle...and depending on your receiver it may possibly not output period....i would suggest hooking your 360 straight to the projector via standard a.v. cables...and projector quality doesn't really change that much so even if it was hi-def you wouldn't really be able to tell.

You have answered your own question. The only difference is the blu-ray player. If you were to play a DVD in both systems, they would sound the same, but blu-ray on its own has better sound and picture than DVD, regardless of the system it's played on. If you want a system that plays blu-ray, get one of those.
